“Berlin – its western Babylon – is as everybody knows the quartier-général of dogmatic Perversity – the Pervert’s Paradise.”

Wyndham Lewis, 1931

The 2025 “Berlin Sex Spaces” exhibition covers the history of public sex in our beautiful city — the queer bars of the 1920s, the brothels of the 1930s, cruising in the 1970s, and the darkrooms of today. We built a tactile and engaging exhibit that will bring visitors through the scandalous world of sex spaces and encourage them to think about sex today. The Berlin Sex Museum breaks the silence on Berlin’s history of public sex spaces. We invite visitors to experience the story of sexual freedom, lust, excitement, and secrecy that surrounded these spaces, coupled with a history of loss and oppression as political eras changed. Berlin communities and artists join us in composing this historical narrative, as well as addressing current politics regarding subculture spaces in Berlin today and their sustainability and value for the city. Through this exhibition, a unique aspect of Berlin’s past and current culture, traditionally veiled and kept in “dark rooms”, can be shared and honored.

Berlin Sex Spaces offers an engaging immersive interactive experience that paints a picture of different kinds of sex spaces throughout history. Take a selfie in the Eldorado, enter a replica of a contemporary dark room and learn about dark room etiquette, explore interactive maps, listen to interviews about cruising in the DDR, look at rare photographs, examine sex club artifacts.
